Magruder’s: Visions for a (Temporary) Vacancy

The grocery store closed on Thursday. Many hope it will re-open under new ownership, but others want to see a difference use for the space.

Sunday afternoon, two older women pulled their black car into the mostly-empty parking lot outside the Alexandria Magruder’s, got out and walked to the door. Seeing four hand-written signs on the window announcing the store’s closure last week, they sighed, got back in their car and drove off. After more than 25 years in the neighborhood, Magruder’s at 4604 Kenmore Ave. closed its doors Thursday—for how long is anyone’s guess. Correction: Magruder's was not at the Kenmore site for 25 years. It was a Safeway until around 2006, when it closed and Magruder's took over the space. Magruder's was formerly at the Shops at Foxchase; that store also closed around 2006 and was torn down to make way for Harris Teeter.   more ›

Shelves normally lined with goods were half empty, as people made a run on discounted items—particularly non-perishable things like paper towels.  Multiple calls to Magruder's corporate office by Patch still have not been returned.  However, a letter provided at the customer …

Magruder's Future in Alexandria Unclear

Rumors are circulating that the Alexandria Magruder's supermarket may close.

The future of Magruder’s supermarket in Alexandria is unclear. Rumors about the store's closing began last week among Alexandria residents. However, Sunday, a store employee told Patch that company officials had not made any official announcement—but the employee also pointed out aisles of unusually empty store shelves. A handful of customers also commented that the grocery store seemed to be out of stock on many items. There is no mention of the closure on the company’s Facebook or Twitter pages. Several calls from Patch to Magruder's Company headquarters have not been returned. There are Magruders locations in Alexandria and Vienna, and in Chevy Chase, Gaithersburg and Rockville, Md. The future of the Vienna location is also uncertain. …
