Landmark Mall Redevelopment: Second Public Meeting on Wednesday

The Howard Hughes Corp. is proposing to demolish the central portion of the mall and replace it with a mixed-use town center.

Didn’t get a seat at the first community meeting on the future of Landmark Mall in April? The city of Alexandria and the Howard Hughes Corp, which owns the central portion of the mall to be redeveloped, have scheduled a second meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting will begin with an open house, during which residents can speak with city staff, at 7 p.m., to be followed at 8 p.m. by a community comments forum. The meeting will take place on the second level of the mall, near the former New York & Company store. Signs will be posted in the mall to direct participants to the meeting location. A Failed Plan for a Failed Mall

Kevin H. Posey of the Alexandria Transportation Commission says the city needs a better plan for Landmark Mall.

As some readers may know, I supported the Beauregard redevelopment plan put forward by JBG Properties and other developers because the design called for a first-class pedestrian environment. I even said nice things about the Waterfront plans which also embodied Council’s commitment to less car reliance, though that stance put me at odds with quite a few individuals in the city. So, I’m hardly in the camp of those opposed to any and all development in Alexandria when I say that I oppose the current plan to redevelop Landmark Mall. Let me make it clear that I support redeveloping the old, tired relic of mid-20th century commerce that squats on the site now. It is an antiquated example of car-based, regionally oriented retail shopping that no…

Landmark Mall Redevelopment Meeting Set for May

The Howard Hughes Corp. plans to redevelop the central portion of the mall into an open-air town center with retail and apartments.

If you missed the April 8 meeting on the future of Landmark Mall redevelopment—or left after not being able to find a seat—no worries. City staff and the Howard Hughes Corp., which owns the central portion of the mall to be redeveloped, will host a second information meeting at May 1. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the mall, on the second floor of the former Lord and Taylor space. Howard Hughes has submitted an application to the city for redevelopment of the portion of Landmark Mall between Sears and Macy's. The proposal calls for demolition of the two-story central area of the mall and replacement of that portion with a mixed-use residential and retail complex with a traditional street grid, sidewalks, trees and open space. Plans are …

Thank you for posting this announcement and information. If the developer is proposing more square footage for housing than for other uses in this mixed use project, it seems disproportional. In the future, it will drain money from the people who own property here, not add to the City coffers in some magical way. Residential development costs a city more than it brings in in new taxes, and the …   more ›

Landmark Mall Redevelopment: Residents Hopeful

Howard Hughes Corp. shared plans Monday to redevelop central portion of mall into town center.

More than 200 people crowded into the community room at Landmark Mall on Monday night to hear how the Howard Hughes Corp. plans to redevelop the central portion of the mall into seven blocks in an urban town center with retail, restaurants and residential space. Howard Hughes, Sears and Macy’s each own about a third of the mall and parking lots. The redevelopment plans would affect only what Howard Hughes owns, and Sears and Macy’s would become stand-alone stores connected by a pedestrian walkway through the street blocks. John Simon, Howard Hughes executive vice president of strategic planning, said Monday the company’s plans call for the central portion of the mall to be demolished and replaced by seven small blocks of mixed-use …

Eight years ago, Hughes predecessor, General Growth Properties filibustered through the meeting time, leaving almost no time for community input. GGP postponed discussion of traffic impacts, pleading need for traffic studies – a year and a half later, the results were still embargoed while the developer negotiated behind closed doors with City staff. To avoid a repeat at Monday’s meeting, …   more ›

The "historic" location for this carnival used to be on the corner of S Jordan St and Duke, where the Speedy Lube and Mango Mike's is now. It was a vacant lot that was also used as a Spy drop during the Cold War.
