Competency Hearing Granted for Suspect in Laboy Shooting

Defense attorneys claim Kashif Bashir suffers from auditory hallucinations.

The man accused of shooting Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy will face a mental competency hearing after a judge granted a defense motion Friday, according to NBC Washington. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Lynhaven Shooting Suspect Not Considered a Flight Risk

Investigation continues into the homicide of 22-year-old Julian Dawkins.

The off-duty Arlington County sheriff’s deputy who police say was involved in the homicide of 22-year-old Julian Dawkins early Wednesday in Alexandria’s Lynhaven neighborhood is not being held in custody because he is not considered a flight risk by authorities, according to WUSA9. • See: Dawkins' Death Ruled a Homicide Dawkins was shot following an early morning confrontation with Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Patterson, police said. He stood there as Julian was lying on the ground wounded and slowly dying and all he did was stand by and call 9.1.1. Bullets are so damaging once they enter the body. If his intent wasn't to kill him he should've tried to save him. If Julian was on a call I'm sure the officer could've apprehended him without the use of a gun! Dawkins' Death Ruled a Homicide

The death of Lynhaven resident Julian Dawkins has been ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner following the results of an autopsy, Alexandria police said Thursday evening.   • See: Alexandria Police ID Victim in Lynhaven Shooting Dawkins, 22, was shot early Wednesday following a confrontation with off-duty Arlington County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Patterson, police said. Alexandria Police ID Victim in Lynhaven Shooting

Julian Dawkins, 22, was pronounced dead at a hospital early Wednesday.

Alexandria police have identified the victim in Wednesday morning's suspicious death in Lynhaven as 22-year-old city resident Julian Dawkins. • See: Police Interviewing Arlington Sheriff's Deputy in Suspicious Death Case At 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of a person being shot in the 100 block of Lynhaven Drive. Wife of Officer Peter Laboy: 'It Was Not His Time to Go'

The wife of wounded Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy called his recovery from a gunshot wound to the head “a miracle” Tuesday at a press conference at police headquarters. “I definitely think it is a miracle. It was not his time to go,” Suzanne Laboy said. “Part of the miracle is that everyone did their job that day.” Peter Laboy, 45, of Alexandria, was responding to a look out from the department for a yellow cab minivan for a minor offense in Old Town on Feb. 27 when he was shot. Suspect in Laboy Shooting Indicted by Grand Jury

Kashif Bashir facing slew of charges in Feb. 27 shooting incident that wounded Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy.

The suspect in the February shooting of Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was indicted by an Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury Monday. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The attempted capital murder charge and aggravated malicious wounding charge each carry sentences of 20 years to life. The firearm charges each carry three-year sentences.  Trial dates will be chosen in the next 10 days. Bashir is being represented by the Alexandria Public Defender’s Office. Alexandria Officer Added to Police Memorial Wall

Morton Marshall Ford III died in 2011 from complications related to a blood transfusion when he was shot in 1974. He was also the center of a charged legal battle regarding then police Chief Charles Strobel.

Alexandria police officer Morton Marshall Ford III, who died in 2011, was among those added this week to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. In remarks to an estimated 20,000 officers, families and supporters at a ceremony Monday at the wall in Washington, DC, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the dead represented “the best of our nation.” In all, 321 new names were added to the wall and honored with a candle-light vigil Monday night, including 120 who died in 2012. Crime Report: Multiple Thefts from Cars in One Neighborhood

One two nights, a dozen residents of one West End neighborhood reported their cars were entered and items were stolen.

More than a dozen people in the neighborhood between W. Braddock Road and King Street west of Bradlee Shopping Center said their cars were entered and cash, cell phones, sunglasses and other items were stolen, according to the Alexandria Police Department. Most of the incidents occurred Monday and Tuesday, May 6 and 7, according to police reports posted on crimereports.org.  See individual incident reports below for more information.
