AT&T Continues Push for Cell Tower, Residents Remain Divided

Representatives for the company gave an updated presentation to the Mason District Land Use Committee Tuesday evening in Annandale.

Representatives from AT&T returned to Mason District Tuesday evening to discuss the company's proposed 128-foot cell tower to be constructed in the Parklawn community, with residents and the Mason District Land Use Committee (MDLUC) at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale. The cell tower, if the application is approved, would be located at 6011 Crater Place, just outside West End Alexandria, near the Parklawn Pool. “We are trying to address a coverage gap, but we are also trying to keep up with customer demand,” said AT&T representative Ed Donohue. Increasing customer demand for data, Donohue added, is what’s driving the demand for better coverage. Some residents at the meeting complained that AT&T’s goal with the tower was …

Mason District Land Use Committee, Parklawn Residents Discuss AT&T Cell Tower

Representatives from AT&T presented their plans for the cell tower, which would be located on the property of the Parklawn pool.

About 75 Parklawn residents and concerned community neighbors joined representatives from AT&T at Tuesday night’s Mason District Land Use Committee (MDLUC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center to discuss the proposed AT&T 128-foot cell tower. The tower, which is a “monopine,” or a cell tower disguised as a redwood tree, will be located at 6011 Crater Place in Mason District, just outside West End Alexandria, if the application is approved. AT&T representative Ed Donohue gave the presentation and said customer complaints about the lack of coverage in the area prompted the company’s decision to construct a tower in the neighborhood. Donohue said finding an appropriate location was difficult due to the challenging topography of …

Parklawn Cell Tower: AT&T Reps Answer Residents' Questions

Community remains divided about cell tower at Parklawn pool.

AT&T representatives answered questions about a proposed 183-foot cell tower on the grounds of the Parklawn Recreation Association Thursday evening but failed to win over those staunchly opposed to the tower. AT&T held the informational meeting at George Mason Regional Library in Annandale. The company plans to construct the tower, which will be disguised as a treepole, at 6011 Crater Place, just outside West End Alexandria. Community members remain divided about the tower’s future. Becky Choi, a local resident protesting the tower, said AT&T representatives provided some good additional data. “We’ve been waiting a long time for some of what they provided,” Choi said. “We had some specific letters we sent to them and they would not respond…

AT&T, Residents to Discuss Proposed Cell Tower

A cell tower is under discussion in the Parklawn community of Fairfax County.

AT&T will speak with residents at a meeting on a proposed cell tower in the Parklawn community from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. The community meeting will take place at the George Mason Meeting Room at the George Mason Regional Library, located at 7001 Little River Turnpike in Annandale. AT&T is applying to Fairfax County for a special exception and special permit amendment to install a 128-foot tower near Parklawn Pool, located at 6011 Crater Place. The tower will be designed as a treepole. Some local residents are objecting to the new tower and have formed a Stop the Parklawn Tower Facebook group. The group maintains that the tower would adversely affect the neighborhood aesthetics and quality of life, lower property values and pose …

Parklawn Cell Tower: AT&T to Fly Locator Balloon Saturday

Balloon will show residents the location and height of a proposed cell phone tower.

This Saturday, AT&T will fly a balloon to the proposed site of a cell phone tower so that residents can visualize where and how tall the tower will be if it is built. The Feb. 2 “balloon fly” will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the grounds of the Parklawn Recreation Association, where AT&T is proposing to build a 183-foot monopole cell phone tower. The Parklawn Recreation Association is located at 6011 Crater Pl., just south of Lillian Carey Park and less than a mile due west of John Adams Elementary School. The site is in Fairfax County. The “monopole” would be a cell phone tower designed like a tree with a three-foot tree canopy on top. A large chain-link fence would surround the area. The Parklawn Civic Association has decided to not take…

Neighbors Protest Proposed Cell Tower in Parklawn Community

AT&T has plans to construct a 183-foot monopole designed as a tree pole.

Some members of the Parklawn community are protesting plans by AT&T to construct a 183-foot cell tower on the grounds of the Parklawn Recreation Association, which operates a pool used by locals, including West End Alexandria residents. The community lies just west of Alexandria city limits. Fairfax County spokesman Brian Worthy said New Cingular Wireless, an AT&T company, submitted an application in June 2009 for a monopole on the grounds of the association. The application was accepted in January 2010, and the Fairfax County Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the application at its Dec. 6 meeting. The tower is described as a monopole designed as a tree pole, including a 3-foot tree canopy. It would be placed …
