The local soccer organization held an end-of-season festival at Witter Field Saturday.
The Alexandria Soccer Association hosted more than 100 local teams as part of its 2013 end-of-season festival. Hundreds of families flocked to the new Witter fields Saturday to enjoy soccer in both the sun and rain. D.C. United mascot Talon was on hand, playing goalie and taking photos with fans. D.C. United player John Thorrington was also scheduled to appear in the afternoon.

T.C. Williams tops Lee 9-2 in Patriot District playoff game.
The T.C. Williams High School baseball team topped Robert E. Lee 9-2 Wednesday night at Simpson Stadium in a second-round game of the Patriot District tournament, according to The Washington Post. “Far from perfect, but it was a memorable last game at home,” tweeted T.C. Williams ace Alec Grosser, who emerged as a major league pitching prospect this season. “Thanks to everyone that came out.” With the victory, the Titans advance to the district semifinals and also clinched a berth into the 16-team Northern Region tournament. T.C. Williams will travel to Burke to face Lake Braddock at 5 p.m. Friday, May 17, in a Patriot District semifinal game. The winner will play Monday, May 20 at Lake Braddock in the district final.

Iesha Kenney, a 15-year-old at Minnie Howard, earned victory in international boxing tournament in Finland on May 4.
Minnie Howard student Iesha Kenney was recognized at City Hall Tuesday night for her victory in an international boxing tournament earlier this month in Finland with the USA Junior World Team. Kenney, who is a straight-A student at Minnie Howard and also plays violin in the orchestra, won a unanimous decision over Elizabeth Dillion of England on May 4 in Pirkka, Finland, while representing the United States. “I was in Finland for three days,” the 15-year-old said. “The competition was two days. Prior to that, I was in training camp [in Colorado Spring, Colo.] for a few weeks. ... In the tournament, I was in one bout and won 5-0.” Kenney, who boxes in the 132-pound weight class, got involved at the boxing program at Charles Houston …

The facility was originally slated to shut down for facility improvements on Monday, May 6.
Alexandria parks officials have delayed the closing date for Chinquapin Park Recreation Center by more than a month. The facility, located next the T.C. Williams High School on King Street, was originally scheduled to close May 6 for repairs and improvements, a staff member said. The center will now close for day-to-day operations on June 17 and should reopen in the fall. Staff members are trying to lessen the closure’s inconvience to community members, city officials said in a news release, but said the scope of the facility improvements requires full closure to ensure public safety, reduce costs and shorten the construction period. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Old Dominion Boat Club, 1 King St. The food will be provided by Pork Barrel BBQ. Music will be provided by City Farm—and it’s not your grandfather’s bluegrass, according to PTSA announcement. There will also be a silent auction featuring trips, services, merchandise, restaurant certificates, music events, movies, theater and sporting events. Tickets are $40 or two for $75. Following the Boston Marathon bombing attacks this week, the City of Alexandria and race organizers have increased police presence and will close a number of roads. Trashcans will be sealed.
The City of Alexandria is working with the organizers of the George Washington Parkway Classic road race to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators following the Boston Marathon bombing attacks. There will be an additional police presence, including uniformed officers and non-uniformed personnel, during the Sunday event. The city also will restrict parking in and around the finish line area, and seal trash cans prior to the race. There will be no parking in Old Town Alexandria on North Union Street between King and Oronoco streets between 4 a.m. and noon April 21. Alexis Sargent is getting ready for 1,000 career strikeouts.
Senior softball pitcher Alexis Sargent, a student at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, is approaching a big milestone. Sargeant will soon complete 1,000 career strikeouts. She’s on pace to reach this milestone this week or next and is currently at 986 strikeouts. She had has thrown no fewer than 14 per game this season and averages 15 strikeouts per game. Sargent is one of the top pitchers in the Washington area and was selected for the All-Met First team as a junior. She will play at the University of Pennsylvania next year. Preteens and teens from around the area to compete at T.C. Williams this weekend.
The Alexandria Spring Invitational cheerleading competition featuring preteen and teen cheerleading teams from neighborhood recreation centers is scheduled for this weekend. The competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at T.C. Williams High School. Tickets are available for purchase at the door the day of the event.
