It's time for this week's roundup of the region's wackiest news.
Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening in at least one of them. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Weird Virginia/DC usually runs on Patch sites every Saturday. Everyone knows that Northern Virginia and DC traffic is notoriously bad. Add a sinkhole to the mix, and you've got problems. That's what happened in Reston this week when motorists on Lawyers Road near Steeplechase were detoured, as a 10-foot sinkhole showed itself. Fairfax Water and road crews patched the spot by the evening rush hour, and thankfully no one was injured by the giant hole in the road. We realize everybody hates traffic, but somebody out there also hates Mother's …

Local residents who took the shooting to heart continue to raise funds for the family. That includes Vicki Forness of Arlington, owner of B&C Jewelers at the Bradlee Shopping Center in Alexandria. Forness, along with friend and loyal customer Karen Bune, is selling a badge pendant honoring Laboy. All proceeds for pendant sales go to Laboy’s family. “I just thought it was kind of perfect,” Forness said. “It was the badge, symbolic of the police, the name on it, the fact that he’s been …

In April, we asked Patch readers to tell us what Alexandria intersections and stretches of roads are most dangerous. Here are your responses.
We asked, and you answered—in droves. Patch received about 200 comments and entries about which intersections and stretches of road are "the worst" in Alexandria. Residents from all parts of town had complaints about the intersection of King Street, West Braddock Road and North Quaker Lane. One reader noted that cars that want to make a left-hand turn onto West Braddock Road create overflow into the Quaker Lane intersection, frequently blocking it. Also in the West End, a number of residents expressed concerns about the intersection of Jordan and Duke streets near the Foxchase Shopping Center. One Patch reader wrote in a comment, "I see a couple of issues with the Jordan / Duke St. intersection. The first is that you have an uncontrolled…

The car thing happened to me, too, a few months ago. I'm near the Latham entrance to the Holmes Run trail. Lock your doors, folks :( Luckily I had nothing "interesting" in the car (my dog's bed, a few cds, cloth shopping bags), but they did take the change that was in there. Ugh!! And random jogger assault? What the hell. I would have thought Seminary was a pretty safe place to run. How …   more ›
