Teams face off Tuesday in the first round of the hunt for the 2013 Northern Region title.
Top-seeded girls soccer teams from Virginia High School League's Northern Virginia districts return to the field this week to battle for the Northern Region title. The Northern Region Girls Soccer Tournament begins Tuesday night. Top seeds from district play host the first round. Games begin at 7 p.m. The playoffs are single-elimination. Commuters in Alexandria are paying about $3.57 per gallon right now—lower than last year, but higher than earlier this spring.
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.69 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Northern Virginia is faring better on gas prices than many other parts of the country, according to AAA. Currently, Virginia’s retail average is 26 cents cheaper than the national average. …

We could see several hurricanes in the mid-Atlantic region this summer; hurricane season 2013 starts June 1.
Hurricanes and severe storms are a part of summertime in our area, and experts predict that this year's season could yield four major hurricanes this year in the Atlantic in the 2013 season. Although summer doesn't officially begin until late June, Dominion Virginia Power is telling customers now that it's prepared for the June 1 start of hurricane season and urging customers to do the same. Morning radio talk show personality Jack Diamond’s departure from Mix-107.3 has sparked a flurry of forlorn followers, who have had plenty to say on Patch since his departure in late April. “The Jack Diamond Morning Show” featured Diamond as well as listener phone calls, sidekicks, traffic and news reports, Hollywood gossip and of course Diamond’s insights about his wife and children. Bert Weiss, who Diamond called a “protégé and partner” has taken over the morning show slot. The station replaced Diamond's program with the syndicated “The Bert Show” out of Atlanta. Kashif Bashir facing slew of charges in Feb. 27 shooting incident that wounded Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy.
The suspect in the February shooting of Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was indicted by an Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury Monday. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The attempted capital murder charge and aggravated malicious wounding charge each carry sentences of 20 years to life. The firearm charges each carry three-year sentences. Trial dates will be chosen in the next 10 days. Bashir is being represented by the Alexandria Public Defender’s Office. Pastor and attorney E.W. Jackson won the Republican nomination to run for lieutenant governor of Virginia over the weekend, and a YouTube video he made last year with strong words against Planned Parenthood is getting attention. Jackson, an African-American minister, lawyer and author from Chesapeake, posted the “message to black Christians” in September 2012, chiding African-Americans for their “slavish devotion” to the Democratic Party and saying that Planned Parenthood had been more lethal to black citizens than the Ku Klux Klan. About 300 participants helped raise money for cancer research in weekend event.
Relay For Life Alexandria raised approximately $50,000 for the American Cancer Society on Saturday and into Sunday at the fields at George Washington Middle School. “I was so happy with the turnout,” said Michelle Daichman, a Relay For Life event development manager who helped organize the weekend event. “At one point we had about 300 people there, even with the rain people kept coming out. … I have to thank all the event sponsors for making the event what it was.” T.C.
