I would think the Belle View Safeway is closer than Bailey's Crossroads. Just sayin...

The Bradlee Shopping Centre has been a cesspool since Roy Rogers was evicted. Then it really wentRead More downhill when the beautiful children of T.C. Williams could no longer dine at the Centre. It should be torn down and converted to condos or Federal Government office buildings. NOW!
Mary Ann Barton (Editor) June 17, 2013 at 11:48 pm
Lee I see what you're saying re the Belle View Safeway; I guess people coming from the otherRead More direction though (closer to 395) might find the Bailey's area closer, especially that larger Giant store over there.

Oh, so the City's Royal Council magnanimously approved this redevelopment plan. Seriously, unlessRead More we're talking about egregious violations of core laws or someone else's property rights, shouldn't these private investments simply be automatically approved? It would ideal in my opinion to reduce these sorts of "decisions" to straightforward pass/fail algorithms and pass-through any externalities that exceed a certain threshold such as costs of traffic impacts (also algorithmic) as fees after the fact. It would allow investors to factor in thirds risks/constraints earlier and avoid the extortion that governments love to engage in. It might also make competitive advantage of localities a little more transparent. Let's stop obstructing progress.

Ahem: "It would BE ideal..." "...factor in THESE risks/constraints..." (not toRead More mention commas and other horrible punctuation) - Thanks iPhone autocorrect!

We end up with better quality development in Alexandria because the city is small enough for CityRead More Council to have careful oversight. Good planning cannot be reduced an algorithmic equation. Watch a public hearing for yourself to see the give-and-take that councilmembers must evaluate on any range of issues--from malls to hostels and restaurants to dog daycare and everything in between. In the case of Landmark, there was a lot of negotiation to ensure the project would begin to implement the vision of the Landmark Area Plan (and some are still not happy with the transit and pedestrian access that was negotiated). Judging by developers willingness to invest here, the process must be working pretty well.

I am disappointed to see that the Noodles and Company on Beauregard recently passed inspection.Read More Some months ago my husband and I purchased a couple of meals from the restaurant and not one but both of our meals had hair in them. Needless to say we immediately returned them to the store and the manager was very rude. We will never eat there again. A almost similar situation occurred at the Popeye's on King street. In addition to inspecting the interior of the restaurants I would like to see where the food handlers and food served to customers is free from debris. Vr

I would love to see a bookstore move into the space previously occupied by the Florist. I think itRead More would be a success--it is a long way to Barnes and Noble. I a a Bradlee shopper.

Quick service dining option... maybe even a Mexican resturant.

My favorite Alexandria burger is actually the ones they serve at Hank's Oyster Bar. Plus they haveRead More high quality greens and tomato as well. And the fries are amazing too!
Nancy M Porter May 19, 2013 at 05:08 pm
Shooter McGees serves my favorite burger! They are juicy with great flavor!

Thanks Drew for updating me on the latest amenities hostels offer in Europe. it has been 30 plusRead More years since i stayed at a hostel. By chance does anyone know what the most respected US hostels offer in terms of amenities (ie do they serve or prohibit alcohol?)? Also what are the demographics of hostelers in the US? I just wonder if serving beer is a fit if a good portion of their visitors are under age. also what is their policy on smoking? i am just curious about these things and i do enjoy a beer or two and dont view smokers as evil. Since the city is so eager to bring hotels to old town, I would think that they would support this proposal but i wonder what incremental tax revenue hostels might bring them (can localities levy hotel like taxes on hostels?).

I am very supportive of a hostel being opened in Old Town. I live on Fayette street and wouldRead More frequently walk by the new hostel if it is approved. A hostel would bring a young and multicultural influence to King St. It would also bring additional patrons to our restaurants and boutiques. It's pretty depressing to read some of the public comments quoted above. People fear the unknown, but I am confident this would be a fine addition to Old Town. We have laws against nuisances and noise in the city. The enforcement of those laws is the appropriate way to deal with any issues, not preventing business to open. I stayed in many hostels when I studied abroad in New Zealand. The hostels were in many different settings including neighborhoods. I hope the city council approves the application and we welcome these young multicultural travelers to our great city.

I'd like to thank all of the hostel supports who have commented here. Hostelling is about theRead More experience of being able to interact with people from over. If you would like to support our hostel project, then please checkout the link below. http://www.capitalhostels.org For those who may be a little nervous about a hostel, then please take a look at the link above as well. It explains the project in more detail. We could have just called it an Inn, but we choose to keep the "hostel" name because of its deep roots in being part of a community. For those parents of the day cares near there, I hope you read the letter that I sent to the owners to pass along to you. As an Alexandrian for the past 10 years, I want to ensure that we are a positive influence that promotes tolerance, respect, and diversity.

It's sad that it takes government action to make cab drivers accept credit cards. The same goes forRead More D.C. You would think that being in a service industry they would have adapted, on their own, to the needs and demands of the consumer.
Charles May 29, 2013 at 08:59 pm
Wait, I thought Alexandria cabs already have credit card machines? At least I can't remember theRead More last time I took one here that refused to accept a credit card for payment.
Drew Hansen (Editor) May 29, 2013 at 09:05 pm
Some cabs do. Not all of them. I think Yellow Cab has had them for a year or two.

I work across the street from the Beauregard St location and that's really to bad for the residentsRead More that don't have transportation and depend on public transportation who wants to do grocery shopping on the bus the next closest grocery shopping choice is Shoppers on Leesburg Pike and Beauregard not within walking distance??? and the older residents I see struggling with their groceries from my office window....and people like me that run over there from time to time to pick up a few things so I don't have to stop on the way home....There isn't anything really in that shopping center I guess CVS will be the new Giant....Good luck to the employees there on their future endeavors to bad you guys had to find out your losing your lively hood on the internet.....

This is a sad state of affairs and it's insulting to read the responses from Alexandria EconomicRead More Development Partnership (AEDP) Staff. This area was PROMISED more business with the BRAC building nightmare. It was all lies. People without cars relied on walking to these THREE stores that are now gone and the city did nothing to try and keep them here. It's a terrible shame.
AlexandriaHomeowner May 19, 2013 at 05:55 pm
Oh good. That was the worst burger I've ever had. Maybe a good restaurant will take its place.
