Virginia's hurricane preparedness sales tax holiday begins Saturday.
Virginia is offering a sales-tax holiday on certain goods that can be used during natural disasters such as hurricanes. Virginia’s hurricane preparedness sales tax holiday runs Saturday, May 25 through Friday, May 31. The holiday exempts 22 categories of smaller items, including batteries, flashlights, bottled water, tarps, duct tape, cell-phone chargers, smoke detectors, and first aid kits. As long as each item costs $60 or less, it is exempt from sales and use tax. Portable generators and inverters priced at $1,000 or less are also exempt during the holiday. The man accused of shooting Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy will face a mental competency hearing after a judge granted a defense motion Friday, according to NBC Washington. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The off-duty Arlington County sheriff’s deputy who police say was involved in the homicide of 22-year-old Julian Dawkins early Wednesday in Alexandria’s Lynhaven neighborhood is not being held in custody because he is not considered a flight risk by authorities, according to WUSA9. • See: Dawkins' Death Ruled a Homicide Dawkins was shot following an early morning confrontation with Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Patterson, police said. Justice needs to be served in this case! This officer was completely wrong and needs to be held without bond. He is a danger to the community. Even though the weather forecast calls for it to be hovering around 70 degrees Monday, Memorial Day, the holiday weekend is a traditional kick-off to the pool season. Here's a rundown of pools in and around Alexandria: City of Alexandria Old Town Pool: 1609 Cameron St. in Alexandria. One of the nation's largest youth organizations votes to begin accepting openly gay kids and teens as members.
More than 60 percent of the Boy Scouts of America’s voting members agreed to lift the ban on admitting openly gay kids and teens into scout troops beginning Jan. 1, 2014. But the move prompted some organizations to say they would pull their sponsorships of packs and troops while LGBT activitists said the policy change should go further by allowing gay adults to take on leadership roles. The Thursday vote did not address allowing gay scout leaders. It only addressed admitting gay youth. Some conservative churches and parents said the scouts were violating an oath to be "morally straight." Memorial Day weekend track work will impact riders on the Red and Orange lines starting at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing Monday night.
Metro will perform system rebuilding work on two lines in the system for Memorial Day weekend May 24-27 on the Red and Orange lines. Metro has not scheduled work on the Blue, Yellow or Green lines. Weekend track work will result in service changes on Red and Orange lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and lasting through system closing Monday night.
