New World Record Set in Alexandria

Olympian Molly Huddle claims world-best time in women's 12km at .US National Road Racing Championships in Alexandria.

Olympian Molly Huddle set a new world record in the women’s 12km race Sunday morning at the .US National Road Racing Championships in Alexandria, according to race officials.

The 12km length is somewhat of an unusual race distance and not run often in any official capacity.

Huddle, a member of the U.S. team at the London Olympics, made the most of the opportunity, finishing in 37 minutes, 50 seconds.

Huddle was pushed by Shalane Flanagan, a fellow former Olympian. The two dueled through the race’s first 10km before Huddle made her move. 

Aaron Braun took first place in the men’s 12km race, finishing in 34 minutes, 28 seconds.

The elite athletes competing in the final stop on the 2013 USA Running Circuit raved about the course’s flatness and speed ahead of the competition through the streets of the Old Town, Del Ray and Potomac Yard neighborhoods of Alexandria.

The race was also open to non-competitive participants, giving local runners a chance to take part in a national running event.
