Thefts from Cars Down, Remain Problem

Alexandria police are warning people against larcenies from vehicles.

Thefts from vehicles in Alexandria’s West End are down from last year but remain one of the most common crimes in the community, according to Alexandria police.

Alexandria police Lt. Mark Bergin, acting commander of police in the West End, said such thefts are down 20 percent citywide compared to last year and down 27 percent in the West End. Police are patrolling the area for the larcenies and are reaching out the community by providing tips to prevent thefts, he said.

“Alexandria is a very safe town, and I think people forget that even in a safe town there are people who steal,” Bergin said. “Quite often, it’s as small as the cup of change from center of the console.”

But many of the thefts involve high-dollar items such as smartphones and laptop computers, he added. Many of the cars are unlocked.

“Thieves sometimes specialize in taking things from cars,” Bergin said. “It’s a difficult crime for us to patrol against. Until they break into a car, they’re just walking down the street, like everyone else.”

Bergin urged local residents to lock their vehicles and take all valuables inside. Anyone with further questions may contact him at 571-238-3778.
