UPDATE: Charles Severance's Attorney Asks to Delay Extradition Hearing to April 24

Severance has made it known he is fighting extradition to Virginia.

UPDATE, Friday 4:25 p.m.: The court-appointed attorney for Charles Severance is filing a request to delay Severance's extradition hearing to April 24, he said Friday.

Severance is wanted for questioning in three high-profile homicides in Alexandria.

Severance's court-appointed attorney, public defender Shayne Welling, said he was disappointed that Monday's hearing was cancelled, noting that he and his client need "extra time because I need to acquire some documents."

Welling said he is trying to get information from local police about Severance's arrest and authorities who came to West Virginia the day that Severance was arrested, specifically "police narratives and the identities from police of people from Virginia."

A status hearing for Severance originally scheduled for Monday has been cancelled, according to Scott  R.  Smith,  prosecuting  attorney  for  Ohio
County,  W. Va. No reason was given by Smith; Severance's court-appointed attorney Shayne Welling was unavailable; he was in court representing another client Friday afternoon, his office said.

Alexandria police are interested in questioning Severance about three high-profile homicides, including that of music teacher Ruthanne Lodato, who was shot at her home on Feb. 6 in the City.

Severance is an Ashburn resident with ties to Alexandria and is being held in West Virginia on an unrelated weapons charge out of Loudoun County.

He was served Wednesday with an extradition warrant signed by Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

Severance was to appear Monday at 10 a.m. for a status hearing in the Circuit Court of Ohio County, W. Va. No further hearings are scheduled at this time, the prosecuting attorney's office said Friday afternoon.
