Police Reports: Man Tries Scam, Grabs Phone

The Alexandria Police Department reported the following crimes in the West End of Alexandria in the past week.

Note: The addresses listed below indicates blocks and not specific addresses of incidents. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not necessarily indicate a conviction.

Alexandria police are investigating an attempted scam and robbery that occurred April 2 in the 5900 block of Duke Street.

A woman reported to police at 3:45 p.m. that a man promised to get her a new cell phone if she would give him her old phone and $50. She agreed to the transaction but became suspicious and didn't want to give the man the money and her phone.

The man then grabbed her phone and cash from her hands and ran away.

April 1

  • 5:51 p.m. April 1, 3600 block of King Street, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s entered victim's unlocked vehicle in the parking lot at this location and stole an ICOM handheld radio, baseball caps and a CD case.
  • 10:09 a.m. April 1, 2600 block of North Van Dorn Street, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole a fire extinguisher from the apartment complex at this location only to have it found in the trash bin and expended of all its contents.
  • 10:45 a.m. April 1, 4300 block of King Street, larceny/theft, open. Victim reported that an unknown suspect used personal credit card information to make fraudulent purchases.
  • 11:13 a.m. April 1, 4600 block of King Street, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect/s stole the rear license plate from her vehicle parked in the lot at this location.
  • 7:33 p.m. April 1, 2200 block of North Van Dorn Street, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect/s entered his vehicle parked in the lot at this location and stole a computer bag containing a laptop, iPad and two cell phone chargers.
  • 9:55 p.m. April 1, 5000 block of Seminary Road, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported that an unknown suspect used personal credit card information to make fraudulent purchases.
  • 2:44 p.m. April 1, 5000 block of Seminary Road, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect/s stole the front license plate from her vehicle parked at the private parking lot at this location.
  • 12:40 p.m. April 1, Ripley Street at Taney Avenue, larceny/theft, pending.
  • 12:56 p.m. April 1, 5300 block of Essex Court, fraud, pending. Victim reported that their identity has been stolen and used for fraudulent activity.
  • 10:45 p.m. April 1, 5900 block of Duke Street, larceny/theft, open. Store employee left her cell phone near a computer where she was conducting training and it was gone once the employee returned to retrieve it. Video caught a customer taking the cell phone.
  • 11:45 a.m. April 1, 400 block of North Howard Street, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole victim's four wheels and tires from her vehicle while parked in apartment complex parking lot.
  • 5:29 p.m. April 1, 300 block of South Van Dorn Street, larceny/theft, open. Victim reported unknown suspect stole her engagement ring from her bedroom at her residence at this location.
  • 7:13 p.m. April 1, 300 block of South Reynolds Street, assault, open. Assault occurred between two or more people who were known to each other.

April 2

  • 6:41 p.m. April 2, 2600 block of King Street, larceny/theft, open. Victim reported unknown suspect stole her cell phone she inadvertently left at the salon at this location.
  • 7:54 a.m. April 2, 4600 block of Kenmore Avenue, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect stole his iPhone 5 while he was working out at the fitness center at this location.
  • 7:31 a.m. April 2, 5000 block of Seminary Road, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole cash left unattended in the hotel room by the victim who was on a school trip and staying at the hotel at this location.
  • 9:30 a.m. April 2, 1400 block of North Van Dorn Street, fraud, open.
  • 7:43 a.m. April 2, Rayburn Avenue at Winston Court, motor vehicle theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole a rental vehicle parked at this location.
  • 5:48 p.m. April 2, 5800 block of Sanger Avenue, assault, open.
  • 10:55 a.m. April 2, 200 block of South Whiting Street, fraud, larceny/theft, open.
  • 10:39 p.m. April 2, 300 block of South Whiting Street, destruction/damage/vandalism of property, open. Victim reported that his ex-wife probably smashed his patio sliding door to his apartment.
  • 11:33 p.m. April 2, 3500 block of Goddard Way, assault, arrest. Assault occurred between two or more people who had a prior relationship or were known to each other.

April 3

  • 1 p.m. April 3, 4300 block of Raleigh Avenue, fraud, arrest. Known subject was arrested for defrauding a cab driver.
  • 6:33 p.m. April 3, 3500 block of King Street, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole victim's bicycle left unsecured and unattended at the Safeway at this location only to be found by police and returned to the owner.
  • 10:43 a.m. April 3, 4700 block of Kenmore Avenue, larceny/theft, pending. Unknown suspect/s stole a camera, electronic games and other electronic gear from victim's apartment.
  • 2:17 p.m. April 3, 5900 block of Duke Street, larceny/theft, arrest. Shoplifting offense occurred at this location.

April 4

  • 2:26 p.m. April 4, 5700 block of Eliot Court, destruction/damage/vandalism of property, larceny/theft, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect/s punched the lock on the right side sliding door of victim's vehicle and stole a power washer, spray painter and two nail guns.
  • 10:50 a.m. April 4, 1400 block of North Beauregard Street, destruction/damage/vandalism of property, pending. Victim reported unknown suspect smashed the rear window of victim's rental vehicle parked in front of the rental office at the apartment complex at this location.
  • 10:39 p.m. April 4, 5900 block of Duke Street, larceny/theft, arrest.
  • 7:22 p.m. April 4, 300 block of South Reynolds Street, trespass of real property, arrest. Trespassing on property after having been previously barred.
  • 2:28 p.m. April 4, 4200 block of Duke Street, trespass of real property, arrest. Trespassing on property after having been previously barred.

April 5

  • 10:52 p.m. April 5, 5300 block of Knole Court, destruction/damage/vandalism of property, pending.
  • 12:41 a.m. April 5, 6100 block of Lincolnia Road, larceny/theft, open. Shoplifting offense occurred at this location.
  • 10:36 p.m. April 5, 5800 block of Edsall Road, larceny/theft, pending.
  • 4:49 p.m. April 5, 100 block of South Reynolds Street , trespass of real property, arrest.
