Animal Control Report: Bat in the House, Abandoned Pug, Baby Squirrels

A look at recent incidents involving Alexandria Animal Control.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and Animal Control Officers responded to the following calls:

Bat in the House: In the 1000 block of Bashford Lane, on April 1, officers responded to a report of a bat that had entered a residence and had physical contact with the occupant. Officers were able to capture the bat and submitted it for rabies testing. The test result was negative.  

Baby Squirrels: In the 600 block of South Pickett Street, on April 2, officers responded to the report of two baby squirrels discovered in a vehicle’s engine compartment.  Officers retrieved the squirrels finding one was deceased and brought the other to the animal shelter where it was transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Spooked Cat: In the 100 block of East Glebe Road, officers responded to the report of an owner bitten by her own cat. The owner was walking the cat outside on a leash when a passing dog scared the cat causing it to bite the owner. A report was taken.

Abandoned Pug: In the 5500 block of Holmes Run Pkwy. on April 2, an emergency services technician responded to the report of a dog abandoned on the side walk just after midnight. The dog was left behind in a medium size blue dog crate. The dog is decribed as a fawn colored male pug. The dog was taken to the shelter.

Cat Scratch at Vet: In the 2600 block of Duke Street on April 3, officers responded to the report of an employee being scratched by a cat during a veterinary procedure. A report was taken.

Dog Bites Dog: In the 200 block of Luna Park Drive on April 3, officers responded to the report of a dog bite. Two residents were walking their dogs when one dog bit the other owner. A report was taken.

Lab Found: In the 3700 block of Heather Court on April 5, officers responded to a resident who found a stray dog. The dog was taken to the animal shelter. The dog was described as a black and brown male lab. The dog was wearing a black harness when found. 

Baby Squirrel: In the 700 block of North Howard Street on April 5, officers responded to the report of a resident who found a baby squirrel near her home. Officers transferred the squirrel to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Stray Pit Bull: In the 100 block of Hume Avenue on April 6, officers responded to the report of a dog bite. The victim was attempting to place a leash on a stray dog when it bit her. The dog is described as pit bull, black in color. The owner of the dog was able to be located. A report was taken.

Dog on the Loose: In the 200 block of East Windsor Avenue on April 7, officers responded to a report of dog bite. A City of Alexandria paramedic observed the dog running at large in traffic and concerned for its welfare attempted to confine it. In the process the paramedic was bitten. The owner of the of the dog was located. A report was taken.
