Thomas J. Fannon, President of Fannon and Sons, Dies at 83

T.J. Fannon was a supporter of many Alexandria charities.

Thomas J. Fannon, president of Fannon and Sons, a family company in Alexandria that began as a wood and coal business in 1885 and evolved into a well-established heating and air conditioning company, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19. He was 83.

In addition to serving as the firm's third generation president, “T.J.” was active in many Alexandria charities and organizations, serving on the board of Inova Alexandria Hospital and as a past president of the Alexandria Rotary Club. He was active in the Alexandria Kiwanis.

Fannon was also a supporter of the Alexandria Symphony, Boys and Girls Club, Senior Services of Alexandria, Alexandria youth baseball and The Fund for Alexandria’s Child.

Fannon was named a Living Legend of Alexandria in 2009.

In October, Fannon was presented At Home in Alexandria’s Community Spirit Award for his support to an organization committed to helping Alexandria residents remain in their homes as they age.

“I’ve known T.J. for over 40 years,” Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said in a release for the Community Spirit Award. “He’s someone whom I have always admired for his love for Alexandria, our citizens, the many youth and sports organizations, the many nonprofit advocates and, above all, his unrelenting commitment to the Inova Alexandria Hospital. He is ‘Mr. Alexandria’ and most deserving of this honor.”

A visitation with family will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday Nov. 22 at Everly-Wheatley (1500 W. Braddock Rd.). A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church (310 S. Royal St.).

Memorial contributions may be made to Inova Alexandria Hospital, Senior Services of Alexandria, Capital Caring Hospice and the Rotary Foundation.
