How to Help Washington Navy Yard Shooting Victims

Two nonprofit organizations, TAPS and The Community Foundation, are accepting donations. Here's how to help.

Two major nonprofit organizations have set up funds to assist the families of victims of Monday’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

Early Monday, Aaron Alexis opened fire in a building at Washington Navy Yard, killing 12 people and injuring many others. Alexis reportedly worked for a military subcontractor in information technology.

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (or TAPS) has set up a fund to support families who lost loved ones in Monday’s mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

TAPS is a nonprofit organization that provides support to anyone who has lost a loved one in military service. “All donations made to this fund will be used to provide comfort and care for the families from the shooting, including support programs and casework assistance for unmet needs,” according to TAPS.

In addition, the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region set up two funds: the Navy Yard Relief Fund and the Safer Communities Fund. The Navy Yard Relief Fund will provide support for victims’ family members. The Safer Communities Fund works to reduce violence in the D.C. area and provides support to non-profit organizations.
