Safeway to Close This Quarter for Major Renovations

The pharmacy trailer is in place behind the Safeway on King Street, indicating renovations are coming soon.

Safeway officials are waiting on final permits before closing the store on King Street near the Bradlee Shopping Center for major renovations.

Pending final approvals from the City of Alexandria, “we are hopeful we can begin the redevelopment of the store in the first quarter of 2013,” said Greg Ten Eyck, director of public affairs and government relations for Safeway Inc.

The pharmacy trailer is now in place behind Safeway, and it will open when the store itself closes to provide ongoing pharmacy services to customers. The pharmacy itself will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Renovations should take a year to 14 months, resulting in a two-story grocery store with more products, outside seating, a Starbucks and dry cleaning services, among other amenities.
