Mango Mike's to Close this Weekend

West End Alexandria hangout had a nearly 20-year run in two locations.

Mango Mike’s, the West End restaurant and bar that dishes out Caribbean fare, will close Dec. 22, management announced on the eatery’s Facebook page early Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s been a great run and we’ve been there almost 20 years between two locations,” owner “Mango” Mike Anderson told Patch. “But it’s time for a change.”

Anderson anticipates a new concept plan for the location at 4580 Duke St. to come forward in early 2014.

In 2012, Anderson extended the Mango Mike’s lease on the property to keep the restaurant open through 2013.

He first opened the East Port Raw Bar in 1984 in the building that now houses Los Toltectos, 4111 Duke St. In 1995, he converted it into the original Mango Mike’s.

In 2000, Anderson moved the restaurant down Duke Street to what was the Bombay Bicycle Club, which was renovated and expanded to four times its original size.

Anderson is a previous chairman of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. He also is a part owner of Pork Barrel BBQ, Holy Cow and the adult-only Sushi Bar in Del Ray. He also has a restaurant, Mango's, in Bethany Beach, Del.

His new Sweet Fire Donna’s Barbecue and Hops will open as early as January at 510 John Carlyle St. in a space that formerly housed Jerry's Subs and Pizza.
