King Street Safeway to Close Saturday

The Safeway store near Bradlee Shopping Center on King Street is offering discounts for its last customers before closing for major renovations.

The Safeway at Bradlee Center on King Street will close its doors this Saturday, July 13.

It will reopen at some point in 2014 after an extensive renovation that will expand the grocery store in size and offerings.

Shoppers can expect to see larger produce, deli, seafood, wine and floral departments, Muckle said, as well as possibly a Starbucks and Bergmann's dry cleaners. The Safeway will have covered (but not underground) parking.

Now through Saturday, the grocery store is offering discounts on all products of 25 percent or more.

"As much as we hate to go away, it's painful for people, we understand that, we will come back with a lot of fanfare," Muckle told Patch in June.

No employees at the Bradlee Safeway will lose their jobs, according to Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle. They will be dispersed to the store of their choosing, he noted. The closest Safeway stores are at 299 S. Van Dorn Street and at Bailey’s Crossroads at 5821 Crossroads Circle in Falls Church.

Still, this is the fourth grocery store to close in Alexandria’s West End in less than six months, giving residents fewer and fewer options close by.

The Giant grocery stores at Bradlee Center and on North Beauregard Street both closed June 6. The Bradlee Center location will be replaced with a Fresh Market store. The North Beauregard Street location remains empty.

Magruder’s closed back in January, and city officials and shopping center officials are working to bring another grocery store to that location on Kenmore Avenue.
