King Street Safeway Renovations Delayed

The outdated Safeway supermarket will undergo major renovations.

Safeway has pushed back the date to close its King Street store in West End Alexandria for major renovations, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle said the store is facing a delay in securing various approvals it needs to begin construction. “We’re simply waiting for some other approvals to be completed, and once we have those approvals secured, we will move forward with trying to identify a closing date,” Muckle said.

Muckle didn’t know off-hand what approvals on which the company was waiting, or whether they were approvals from the city or another entity, but said there were more than one. Safeway still plans to close the store this year, he said, and the company is eager to move forward.

The store is located at 3526 King St. Alexandria near the Bradlee Shopping Center. A pharmacy trailer is already in place behind the store.

Renovations should take a year to 14 months, resulting in a two-story grocery store with more products, outside seating, a Starbucks and a dry cleaning service, among other amenities.
