Hotel Could be Headed to Carlyle Street

Developer JM Zell Partners is considering a hotel at 760 and 765 John Carlyle St. instead of an office tower.

Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood is looking mighty nice to developers now that the National Science Foundation plans to move into the area around 2017.

JM Zell Partners is mulling over whether to build a 240-room hotel at its Carlyle Plaza development, according to a report in the Washington Business Journal.

The company had been considering building a larger, 33-story office building that it could lease to federal agencies such as the NSF, which has announced plans to move to Hoffman Town Center on Eisenhower Avenue next to the AMC movie theaters on Swamp Fox Road.

Alexandria Economic Development Partnership President and CEO Val Hawkins has estimated that the NSF will generate 60,000 hotel room nights per year.

The WBJ reports that Zell plans to pitch the idea to city leaders this week. Current zoning in the area would allow a hotel instead of an office tower.
