City Working to Repair Damaged Sewer Line

A Fairfax County-owned sewer line was damaged near Holmes Run.

West End residents soon will hear things that go pump in the night after a sewer line was inadvertently damaged while a City of Alexandria contractor was performing stream restoration work near Holmes Run.

Contractor Avon Construction Monday morning damaged a Fairfax County-owned 30-inch terra cotta sewer line that crosses Holmes Run near Chambliss Street.

A small amount of flow escaped from the broken pipe until Avon was able to remove debris, which enabled flow to pass through the pipe without escaping.

Fairfax County was immediately notified. County workers, who were nearby, were able to divert sewer flows away from the break via an upstream structure within minutes after the incident, according to a City of Alexandria news release.

It was determined there was no detrimental impact on the Holmes Run. The contractor is now performing a temporary and then permanent repair, after which the main will be placed back in service. No customers were affected.
