City Extends Deadline for Poet Laureate Nominations

The city will accept nominations through Nov. 26.

The City of Alexandria has extended the deadline for poet laureate nominations through Nov. 26.

The poet laureate helps promote the appreciation of poetry as an art form, encourages creative writing and reading of literature and promotes literacy through poetry. The individual will serve as poet laureate for three years and receives a modest honorarium.

All nominations must be submitted to the Office of the Arts, 1605 Cameron St., Alexandria, VA 22314 by 5 p.m. Nov. 26. The new poet laureate will be named in March 2013.

Local residents can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. Nominees must be distinguished in the field of poetry through a body of work, published or unpublished. Nominees are limited to people who have lived, worked or studied in the city for at least one year.
