Beatley Library Displays Potomac River's Majesty

F11, a women’s photography collective based in the Washington, DC area currently has an exhibit on display at Alexandria’s Beatley Central Library and it’s all about the pulse of the Potomac River.
 
Collective member Christine Bernstein of Old Town said the group was “initially drawn to the project because of the river’s extraordinary beauty despite the decline of water quality and the effects of construction along its four-mile course.”
 
At the Beatley exhibit, nine photographers showcase 22 images of the river, paying homage to its many facets of beauty – nature, bridges and industry, including pollution.

Some of the group’s members are professional photographers while others are “serious amateurs actively involved in the craft,” Bernstein said during a tour of the exhibit this month.
 
The F11 photographs focus largely on metropolitan areas but also include features in the less populated Paw Paw, West Va., Williamsport and Point Lookout in Maryland and Virginia’s Colonial Beach.
 
Images range from the active and glorious scene of kayakers paddling toward Georgetown University, or serene exposed driftwood begging for contemplation to the Wilson Bridge illuminated at sunset.
 
“Our goal is to raise awareness of what the Potomac River provides us and motivate continuing efforts to preserve and protect it,” said Bernstein, who is also a member of Alexandria’s Waterfront Commission.
 
The exhibit is on display through June.
