Virginia to Start Seminary Road HOV Lanes Ramp

Project is expected to help ease BRAC congestion.

Virginia is moving forward with construction on a Interstate 395 HOV lanes ramp at Seminary Road.

The state on Wednesday awarded a $55 million contract to Archer Western Construction for the ramp, as well as an extension to to the northbound auxiliary lane at Seminary Road. The project is expected to be completed by December 2015, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation news release.

The Washington Business Journal reports the following statement from Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton:

"In particular, upon completion of the Interstate 395 improvement project in Alexandria, morning commuter traffic in and around and access to the Mark Center will be greatly improved," Connaughton said. "We are acting now to make improvements that will provide safe roads for our citizens and the quality of life they deserve."

The Mark Center is home to the Army's Washington Headquarters Service and its 7,000 employees, which opened in 2011 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure process.
