Seeking Safety: Markers Plan Improved at Holmes Run

The city has increased the number of mile markers with solar lights to be installed along greenway.

Alexandria parks officials are now planning to install mile markers every one-tenth of a mile along Holmes Run Trail in response to community concerns that the markers were too far apart.

The original plan called for the markers to be placed every one-fourth of a mile, said park planner Dana Wedeles. Residents complained at a meeting in January, saying the mile markers were too far apart, and parks officials made changes based on that feedback.

Installing mile markers every tenth of a mile is consistent with standards in Arlington County, Wedeles said.

The makers are geared to help improve safety along the trail following two attacks on women in fall 2012. Markers will allow trail users to more accurately report their location to police or EMS personnel if needed.

The 4-foot-high markers, which will be illuminated by solar lights, are currently in production. Wedeles said she hoped they could be installed by this summer.
