Alexandria Parks Cleanup Set for April 27

Volunteers will remove trash from Holmes Run Park, Fort Williams Park.

Don’t forget the outdoors in this year’s spring cleaning.

Volunteers are needed to help tackle trash at Holmes Run and Fort Williams parks on Saturday, April 27. Coordinator of the Holmes Run Park cleanup, Mary Zoeter, said that cleanup has taken place for at least the past 10 years, in spring and fall.

“Anybody who uses the park, even if the person never drops on piece of trash, should work to keep that park clean,” she said. “It’s similar to a house: if other people come to a house and drop trash, you’re going to pick up that piece of trash. So, I believe everyone has a duty to keep that park clean.”

Holmes Run volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. at a table set up near the Beatley Bridge. Bags, gloves and grabbers will be provided, and recyclables will be sorted and set aside for recycling.

Zoeter also encouraged volunteers to “adopt” a section of the park to regularly keep clean between the organized cleanups.

Also on April 27, volunteers will clean up Fort Williams Park. That event takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants will need to bring their own gloves, bags and tools.

Volunteers should meet at the entrance on Duke Street, west of Fort Williams Parkway.
