Mayor Promotes Hearing Loss Screening

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille promoted hearing loss screenings Tuesday morning by having his own hearing checked at Sonus Hearing Care Center in Alexandria.

One in five Americans suffer from hearing loss in at least one ear, according to Sonus. The company, which sells hearing aids, is offering free screenings to help men and women with undiagnosed hearing loss and to promote Better Hearing Month in May.

Euille told Patch that his screening found his hearing was normal for a man his age.

According to Sonus, approximately 48 million Americans experience some form of hearing loss, yet only 13 percent of doctors screen for it.

“Millions suffer from hearing loss but since it happens gradually, most people don't recognize the signs and eventually have it pointed out to them by a friend or family member,” said Dr. Thomas  J. Tedeschi, vice president of Sonus business development, in a prepared statement.

“If the TV or radio volume keeps getting louder, if your loved one asks for things to be repeated, if you find that he or she is withdrawing from social situations more than before, these could all be signs of hearing loss. Unfortunately, untreated hearing loss can lead to sadness, depression, anxiety, paranoia, and poor social relationships. It is crucial that the signs are not ignored. We are encouraging spouses, companions, and caregivers to bring loved ones in for a complimentary screening if they suspect any hearing loss.

“The sooner a hearing problem is addressed, the more effectively it can be treated. Having personal support during a screening can be incredibly comforting and helpful—plus people are more likely to follow through with any next steps if they’re not alone,” he said.
