Campagna Center Event to be Sunday at Christ Church.

New Neighbors is a program of the Campagna Center.

Christ Church will highlight The New Neighbors English Language Learners and Family Literacy Program (New Neighbors) as a part of its annual outreach Sunday celebration April 14.

New Neighbors is a program of the Campagna Center, though the program was founded more than 10 years ago by Christ Church parishioner Jean Johnson. New Neighbors provides educational programs and related services to help immigrant and refugee families become self-sufficient and fully participating members of the community.

The program offers eight levels of adult English classes within a structured and results-oriented curriculum. Classes are held in the facilities at the Fowler House, on the grounds of Historic Christ Church.

“The Campagna Center is extremely grateful to Christ Church for its ongoing commitment to this most important program which has helped well over 2,000 adults since its inception,” said Tammy Mann, president and CEO at The Campagna Center, in a prepared statement. “New Neighbors aligns well with our commitment to support adults to become self-sufficient as we have for decades through the work we do with parents and adults served through our comprehensive Early Head Start and the Alexandria Head Start programs.”

Sunday’s program will honor Johnson and feature a panel discussion about the program. The panel discussion will be moderated by Elizabeth Nelson, chair of the outreach committee at Christ Church. Panelists will include Jay Beckhorn, The Campagna Center chairman of the board; two New Neighbors teachers; two New Neighbors students; and Marcia D’Arcangelo, New Neighbors director.

The panel will answer questions regarding the New Neighbors program, its core components and the benefits it yields for students and the teachers who volunteer to support the program.

The reception and panel discussion will take place from 10:20 to 11 a.m. at the church, 118 N. Washington St. It is free to the public.
