Alexandria Community Bike Rides Set for Spring

The Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee is sponsoring two community bike rides in the city in April and May.

Both rides are suitable for beginners, said Jonathan Krall, secretary of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

“It’s fun,” Krall said.”It’s good exercise. We have some really beautiful bicycle paths in Alexandria. They are exercise facilities that are near our homes, and they’re free.”

A family-friendly ride is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 14, at Holmes Run in West End Alexandria. Cyclists in the low-speed ride will meet at Beatley Central Library, 5005 Duke St., and will follow the Holmes Run Trail.

The group will return to the library at the halfway point for cyclists who want a shorter ride. The ride will also go through Cameron Station and go as far east as the Eisenhower Avenue bike path.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will sponsor a ride through destinations on Alexandria’s East End. Riders should meet outside Dunkin’ Donuts at Potomac Yard Center, 3325 Jefferson Davis Highway.

The group will loop around the east end of Alexandria, showing how to get to popular eating, shopping and entertainment destinations including Potomac Yard, Del Ray, the Hoffman Center, Old Town and Potomac Greens.
