Torpedo Factory Talks, ACT for Alexandria Celebrates 10 Years, Day of Service in Alexandria & More This Week

A roundup of upcoming events and activities this week related to business and real estate, compiled by the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP).

We have yet another busy week in Alexandria! From discussions on the Torpedo Factory, to Del Ray businesses to food trucks, here's a rundown of the week ahead:

ACT for Alexandria is celebrating 10 years of community leadership with a Birthday Barbeque Bash (Mon. 5/12, 6:00 – 8:30 PM, The Waterfront Market & Café, 7 King St., ticket required).

AEDP and Faroll Hamer, the Director of the City’s Department of Planning & Zoning have been invited to speak at the monthly meeting of the Del Ray Citizens Association (DRCA) (Mon. 5/12 at 7:30 PM, Reingold Offices, 433 E. Monroe Ave).  AEDP will discuss the retail business dynamic of Del Ray and will discuss factors retailers consider when exploring opportunities in the community.

The City Council will hold a work session with the Torpedo Factory Art Center Board followed by their first legislative meeting of the month where items of interest include Consideration of the Monthly Financial Report for the period ending March 31, 2014 and Introduction and First Reading of an Ordinance to Amend and Reordain the Code of the City of Alexandria to allow for Food Truck Vendors, per the City staff proposed draft ordinance (Tues. 5/13 at 5:30 and 7:00 PM, respectively, City Hall, Council Workroom and Council Chambers).

The Alexandria Small Business Development Center's Start, Manage, Grow workshop series continues and will feature Kim Guarino Bulger, Evolve Marketing. If you are looking to elevate your brand, generate buzz and be viewed as the top in your field, join Kim as she explains steps you should take to elevate your service firm and stand out from the 9,000 small businesses in Alexandria alone. The program is titled "6 Steps to Increase Your Company’s Influence & Thought Leadership" (Weds. 5/14 at 9:30 AM, AEDP/SBDC Offices, 625 N. Washington St., registration required).

The Alexandria Veterans Business Enterprise Center (AVBEC) is holding its first veterans networking event of 2014.  Veteran-owned businesses are encouraged to attend as well as join the AVBEC!

Businesses and individuals will spend a half day giving back through Volunteer Alexandria's Day of Service at sites all around Alexandria.  The 7th Annual event is part of Spring for Alexandria, a partnership between Volunteer Alexandria and the City of Alexandria.

City Council will hold their monthly public hearing where items of interest include consideration of a Development Special Use Permit for  Cameron Park, a mixed-use project by JBG at 430 & 450 S Pickett Street (Carpet One site).  Other items under consideration can be found here once the docket is published (Sat. 5/17 at 9:30 AM, City Hall, Council Chambers).
