Royal St Bus Garage & Cameron Park Update, Food Trucks, Business Philanthropy Summit & More This Week

A roundup of upcoming events and activities this week related to business and real estate, compiled by the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP).

Alexandria officials and local organizations have a busy week ahead, with meetings on everything from business philanthropy to food trucks to the Waterfront. Here's a rundown for you:

The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce is hosting a breakfast panel featuring the Alexandria City Council, who will discuss issues facing our City and answer questions (Tues. 5/6 at 7:30 AM, Clyde's at Mark Center, 1700 N. Beauregard St, registration required).

The Planning Commission will hold a work session to provide an update and discuss the Royal Street Bus Garage Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee process followed by their regular monthly meeting where items of interest include consideration of a Development Special Use Permit (DSUP) for Cameron Park, a mixed-use project by JBG at 430 & 450 S Pickett Street (Carpet One site) and discussion of the proposed food truck program (Tues. 5/6 at 6:00 and 7:00 PM, respectively, City Hall, Council Chambers).

Volunteer Alexandria, in partnership with the City of Alexandria, will hold its 16th Annual Business Philanthropy Summit,where business and nonprofit leaders gather to discuss community needs, celebrate local corporate philanthropy, and award leaders who have had a positive impact on the City. This year's event will feature Cara Carleton "Carly" Fiorina, considered one of the most powerful women in business during her tenure at Lucent and Hewlett-Packard.  Rebecca Cooper, a longtime friend and supporter of Volunteer Alexandria from ABC7/WJLA-TV and News Channel 8, will be the emcee at the event (Weds. 5/7 at 7:30 AM, First Baptist Church, 2932 King St., registration required).

The Board of Architectural Review (BAR)- Old and Historic District will hold their regular monthly meeting where items of interest include review of alteration and signage proposals at 710 King Street (Las Tapas) for new restaurant John Strongbow's Tavern, and a work session to discuss the proposed development project at 500 N. Union Street- Robinson Terminal North (Weds. 5/8 at 7:30 PM, City Hall, Council Chambers).    

 

The Alexandria Small Business Development Center's Start, Manage, Grow special workshop series on federal contracting continues and will feature John Renner, CPA, Renner & Company, CPA P.C. He will present information for small businesses that are new to Federal contracting or thinking of getting into the Federal arena, focused on financial and operational considerations that will impact their ability to successfully compete for Federal Government contracts. The program is titled "Practical Tips for New Federal Contractors(Thurs. 5/8 at 9:00 AM, AEDP/SBDC Offices, 625 N. Washington St., registration required).

 

The West End Business Association (WEBA) will hold a Business Networking Happy Hour open to all Alexandria businesses (Thurs. 5/8, 5:30 PM, Courtyard by Marriott Pentagon South, 4641 Kenmore Ave., rsvp requested).

 

The fifth Waterfront Community Meeting, the last of a five-part series for Phase I of the Landscape and Flood Mitigation Design Project, will take place this week. An updated alternative design, reflecting the outcome of the City of Alexandria-ODBC negotiations, for the Core Area of the Waterfront which extends from Duke Street to Queen Street, will be presented for community review and input (Thurs. 5/8 at 6:30 PM, the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St).
