Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Braddock Road

Police have not identified the male victim in early Friday accident.

A man was struck by a vehicle and killed Friday morning on Braddock Road in Alexandria, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said the incident occurred at about 7 a.m. Friday. A vehicle was traveling westbound on Braddock Road and struck a pedestrian between North Hampton Drive and Beauregard Street.

The man was walking in the roadway but was not in a crosswalk, Donaldson said. The vehicle then crashed into a tree in the median.

“It doesn’t appear to be anything at fault of the driver, but it’s still under investigation,” Donaldson said.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was not seriously injured but was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, he said. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.

Crash reconstruction detectives are still working on the scene of the crash, and Braddock Road between North Hampton Drive and Beauregard Street remained closed as of 11:30 a.m. Friday.

The pedestrian did not have any identification on him, Donaldson said. Police will release his name once they determine his identity and notify family.

The medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy tomorrow, Donaldson said. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, but that determination will be made by the crash reconstruction team.

My neighbor said he arrived on the scene shortly after the accident and said (at the time) is appeared the pedestrian was hit twice, by a second vehicle that drove away. It's sad when any pedestrian gets hit, much less killed, yet crossing the street at that time of day and not near a crosswalk, corner, or light is never a good idea. I wonder if there was a bus stop on the opposite side of Braddock Road.
