Library to Hold “Speed Dating” Event

Library Speed Dating starts Jan. 10 and will be held once a month.

The Beatley Central Library has a knack for matching up Alexandrians with that perfect book. Now, the library may help match some couples, too.

“Library Speed Dating” gives book lovers a chance to find love (or friends) by focusing on literary themes. Libraries nationwide have found the programs to be a great way to bring in a new group of users who may not be familiar with what libraries offer, said Renee DiPilato, Beatley Central Library manager.

“Libraries across the country are doing it, and it’s a great way to attract people who are interested in books,” DiPlato said. “Libraries are neutral for a lot of people, and they feel comfortable there.”

DiPlato said the event will be similar to other speed dating events. “We’ll have some mixers and games with a literary theme, and then people will do the roundabout—I don’t know if that’s the best way to describe it—where they move around the table,” she said.

Library Speed Dating will take place the second Thursday of each month, with the kick off Jan. 10. The events start at 7 p.m. The library will also serve refreshments and have prizes to give away to participants.

“It might not be a romantic match, but it’s a way to meet new friends and people,” DiPlato said.

Interested participants should contact the library at 703-746-1751 or email kosborne@alexandria.lib.va.us to reserve a spot.
