Beatley Library Book Sale Draws Crowds

Local residents crowded the central library over the weekend in search of a good bargain.

Book lovers crowded into the  Beatley Central Library over the weekend to snatch up a bargain during the Friends of the Beatley Central Library annual fall book sale.

“This book sale has been going famously well,” Eileen Bradley, president of Friends of the Beatley Central Library, said Saturday afternoon. “It’s been wonderful. The volunteers have been terrific, but the patrons have been great.

“All Alexandria, I think, has been here because we had about (20,000) to 30,000 books, and I think half our inventory is gone. And that’s terrific."

The sale began with a members-only preview at 4 p.m. Thursday. People began lining up for that sale at 1:15 p.m., Bradley said.

“We’re a very popular site, and I think the reason we are, and the dealers will bear this out, is because we have high-quality books,” she said. “We sort very carefully. Our prices are good. Our customer service is fantastic — the volunteers are great. and they say we organize the sale better than anyone else. So we’re quite proud of what we do.”

General prices were $3 for hardbacks, $1 for paperbacks, $1 for CDs and $2 for DVDs. Children’s books were less expensive, at $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. Also, to encourage children to buy books, kids paying for their own purchases received a 20 percent discount.

Alexandria resident Ruthann Winterhalter was one of hundreds who stopped by the sale Saturday, looking for CDs, DVDs and books. “It’s pretty impressive,” she said. “They’ve got a variety of things.”

All sales benefited the Friends of Beatley Central Library.
