Alexandria to Participate in Litter Enforcement Month

April is Litter Enforcement Month in Alexandria, and agencies throughout the city, including the Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and Code Administration Department, with support from the Alice Ferguson Foundation, will increase enforcement of existing litter laws.

In its third year of observance, Litter Enforcement Month has attracted a record number of participating organizations: 15 agencies from 12 jurisdictions. Litter Enforcement Month is part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative, which supports local law officers as they dedicate one month to vigorously enforce litter, illegal dumping and unsecured truck load laws.

The initiative is a region-wide effort, spearheaded by the Alice Ferguson Foundation, to raise awareness of the issues caused by and related to litter, illegal dumping and related crimes.

Residents are urged to partner with the Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and Code Administration Department to discourage littering while working toward changing behaviors that contribute to making the community less attractive and less healthy, according to a city news release.
